What Is Google Business Profile and Why It Matters for Local Businesses

When someone searches for a business like yours on Google, the first thing they see isn't your website, it's your Google Business Profile. Here's how it works and why it deserves your attention.

When someone nearby searches Google for “dentist near me” or “real estate agent in Puerto Vallarta,” the results they see first aren’t a list of websites. They’re a map with business cards, photos, star ratings, hours, a phone number, and a button to get directions.

That business card is powered by Google Business Profile. If your business isn’t there, or if the information is wrong, you’re invisible at one of the most important moments in a customer’s decision process.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that Google provides for businesses. When claimed and optimized, it appears in:

  • Google Maps: when someone searches your business type in an area
  • The local pack: the three-business map block that appears in regular Google search results
  • The knowledge panel: the information card that appears to the right on desktop searches for your business name

From your listing, potential customers can call you, get directions, visit your website, read reviews, browse photos, and message you, all without leaving Google.

What information does a listing show?

A complete profile displays:

  • Business name and category
  • Address and map pin
  • Hours of operation
  • Phone number and website
  • Photos of your business, team, or work
  • Customer reviews and star rating
  • Your response to those reviews
  • Services offered
  • Questions and answers
  • Posts and updates you publish

Every field you fill in accurately is one more reason for someone to choose you over a competitor.

Why it matters so much for local businesses

Local search is how a large percentage of customers find businesses near them before making contact. Google processes billions of local searches every month, and businesses that have complete, optimized profiles get the visible real estate those searches produce.

Consider what’s at stake: someone searching “property manager Puerto Vallarta” or “restaurant in Bucerias” is typically ready to act, they need a service, they’re comparing options, and they’re going to pick one of the first results they see.

A complete profile with good photos and recent reviews can be the margin between being chosen and being skipped.

Claimed vs. unclaimed: what’s the difference?

Google often creates Business Profile listings automatically based on publicly available data. These unclaimed listings are incomplete and uncontrolled, anyone can suggest edits, information can be wrong, and you have no ability to respond to reviews.

Claiming your profile takes 10 to 15 minutes. Once verified, you control what appears.

How to claim and set up your profile

  1. Go to business.google.com and search for your business name
  2. If a listing already exists, request to claim it; if not, create a new one
  3. Choose the correct primary category
  4. Enter your address and service area
  5. Add your phone number and website
  6. Complete the verification process (Google may mail a postcard, call a number, or in some cases offer instant verification)

Verification is required before your profile becomes fully active. Don’t skip it.

How to optimize your profile for better visibility

Claiming it is step one. What you do with it determines how well it performs.

Choose the right primary category

Your primary business category is the most important field for determining which searches you show up in. Be specific: “orthodontist” beats “health” and “dentist.” You can add secondary categories to capture adjacent searches.

Add real photos: and update them

Businesses with photos receive significantly more clicks and requests for directions than those without. Upload:

  • Exterior: so customers can recognize your location
  • Interior: to build trust before they arrive
  • Team or staff: names and faces build credibility
  • Work samples or products: show what you actually deliver

Update photos every month or two. An active profile signals to Google that the business is current.

Keep hours accurate

If your hours change seasonally, on holidays, or during special events, update them. A customer who shows up when you’re closed because your Google listing showed wrong hours won’t come back.

Post updates regularly

Google Business Profile lets you publish posts, updates, offers, events, announcements. Posting every 2 to 4 weeks keeps your profile active and may improve your visibility in local results.

Respond to every review

Responding to reviews, both positive and negative, shows prospective customers that your business is attentive. It’s one of the signals Google uses to assess engagement.

For positive reviews: thank the customer and mention something specific. For negative reviews: respond professionally, keep it short, and offer to resolve the issue privately.

Common problems that hold local businesses back

Unclaimed profile with wrong information: hours, phone, or address that nobody has corrected because no one owns the listing.

Duplicate listings: Google Maps sometimes shows the same business twice. Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse customers.

No reviews: even a great profile with no reviews makes people hesitant. If you have satisfied customers, ask them.

Photos that haven’t been updated in years: outdated photos can misrepresent your current business and reduce trust.

  • At least 10 quality photos uploaded
  • At least 5 reviews with a rating

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Business Profile cost anything? The core listing is free. Google does offer paid advertising options within Google Maps and search, but the organic listing itself costs nothing.

Do I need a physical address to have a listing? Not necessarily. If you serve customers at their location (plumber, accountant, landscaper), you can create a service-area business without displaying your home address.

How long does it take to rank in local results? A newly claimed, complete, verified profile with photos and a handful of reviews can start appearing in local results within a few weeks. Competitive categories in dense markets take longer.

What if my listing has incorrect information I didn’t enter? Google allows users to suggest edits, which can sometimes be approved automatically. Once you claim and verify your profile, you can override incorrect information and flag problematic suggestions.

Google Business Profile is one of the highest-ROI marketing tools available, and it’s free. The businesses that invest time in getting it right consistently out-rank and out-convert those that don’t.
